We'll kick things off by introducing your dog to the physical cue that signals them to walk backwards. Initially, we celebrate each small step backward with a reward, gradually increasing our expectations until the dog confidently understands the movement. This step-by-step reinforcement helps build a solid foundation for the behavior. Once your dog masters walking backwards with the desired speed and precision, and maintains eye contact, we'll introduce the verbal command. It's crucial to say the command before presenting the physical cue, creating a clear pattern for your dog to follow. Over time, the verbal command alone will prompt the behavior, eliminating the need for a physical cue. Additionally, we're diving into the world of conditioned reinforcers by teaching three specific markers that signal different types of rewards: the continuation marker, the terminal marker, and the secondary terminal marker. These markers are key to clear communication and effective training. But that's not all – we're also laying the groundwork for two exciting commands: the "send away" and the "through" command, with the latter involving your dog running through your legs. These exercises are not only fun but serve as stepping stones to more complex behaviors, boosting your dog's motivation and eagerness to learn. Exercising a dog is vital for their well being and studies have shown that exercise is a common factor in the longevity of dogs. Below is the list of some of the things I recommended and do with my dogs, and things you want to watch for. 1. Hiking Ideally off leash and preferably in varied terrain. If your dog needs to be on a lead, use a harness that does not restrict his movement. 2. Swimming When choosing where to swim your dog, be aware of Blue-Green Algae toxicity and select your water source carefully. Also, watch for the amount of water your dog might ingest when swimming if he bites at the water or grabs at toys as Water Intoxication is a risk. 3. Underwater Treadmill Exercise on an underwater treadmill can be better for your dog than swimming. It can take some of the pressure off your dog’s joints. 4. Stair Work Your dog walking beside you up and down stairs is good for both of you! You will need to train this with your dog. You can play Stair Masters in Home School the Dog. https://www.homeschoolthedog.com/ 5. Treadmill Treadmills are great for exercise, but I strongly suggest that the treadmill you use is one that is specifically for dogs (I use DogTread). I only use the treadmill with my dogs walking or trotting, alternating between the two, with more walking than trotting. 6. Nose Work You can start by hiding cookies under cushions and have your dog search for them. Chances are you might have a Nose Work class near you. Jane Book has a great online course “The Dog Scents”. 7. Fitness Stations Train and use tricks to get your dog to use his body. You can introduce fitness equipment especially for dogs, but there are many DIY options for you with things that you will have at home. 8. Recallers Games Recallers is the foundation of all we do with our dogs, and the games not only create a brilliant relationship with our dogs but exercise bodies and minds too! https://recallers.com/ 9. Retrieve Retrieving is fun to teach your dog and my “Bring Me!” program is in both Recallers and Home School the Dog. 10. Cycling Use an appropriate leash attachment and don’t hold your dog’s lead in your hand. Have your dog on the side away from traffic, and ideally avoid traffic totally. Make sure the surface you cycle on is suitable for your dog. 11. Dog Sports There is a multitude of sports that you and your dog can enjoy together. You all know that I love training and competing in dog agility. Snowshoeing or Skijoring These are great sports for winter if you live somewhere with snowfall. Make sure that the equipment you use is safe for your dog. 13. Dog Parks Taking your dog to a dog park might be great, or it could also be an experience you would not want your dog to have, so be cautious before letting your dog into a dog park. 14. Day Care Like dog parks, Day Care could be very beneficial or not a good experience for your dog. Do your research when choosing Doggie Day Care. 15. Technology Remote feeders can help us create exercise games for our dogs. There are many brands available. Make sure you start with exercise that your dog can manage and build it up gradually if your dog has led a more sedentary lifestyle, . Before starting any specific exercise program for your dog, he should be seen by a veterinarian to ensure there are no physical limitations. Teach Your Dog The Paws Up Trick For A Picture Perfect Pose Let's say that we would like our dog to pose to get a picture taken. Recently in our community, Wag Nation, I did a little demonstration of how you can teach your dog the trick “selfie” where the dog will pose on your shoulders. Now let's say you're out walking, you wanted your dog to pose on a log or to pose in front of you know, a building, or to maybe pose in some cute way with their paws up on your couch. So, that could be a behavior. Let's shape that behavior. But here's the critical point about shaping. You don't just go, “Oh, I want this behavior. I want the dog posing on these things.” You have to split that behavior down into smaller pieces. We want outside the box shaping. So, here's a simple, easy way you can do this. And I talked about this in my YouTube video on Target Training. Take a big blanket and you're going to put a blanket on the floor and you're going to give your dog the cue ‘search’ and toss a cookie away from the blanket. So, the blanket's opened up really big, but we're throwing the cookie off the blanket. Why? Because when the dog eats the cookie, they're going to come back to you. When the dog comes back to you, you're going to say “search” and throw another cookie off the blanket. You might do that three or four times until the dog says, “Well, those cookies are great over there. I'm going to come back here really quick.” Alright, they're coming back on the blanket really quick. Now we're going to say “cook”, and we're going to feed them a cookie in their mouth. And then we're going to say “search” and throw a cookie off. Very quickly, the dog's going to be driving back to the blanket. If you were standing on the blanket, now you're going to get off that blanket. After a few more repetitions, you're going to fold that blanket in half. Then you're going to fold it in half again. And before you know it, you have a little square of a blanket. That my friend is a target because I promise you, your dog will be coming in and standing on it with their paws. You could put the cue ‘pose’ with that blanket. Now let's put it on a footstool. Let's put it on your couch. Now let's get rid of that blanket and take a little towel. Put it on the footstool or on the couch. And now we've got the cue ‘pose’ and our little towel. Let's get rid of that towel. Just say “pose” and point. I use the cue ‘paws up’ for this. Anytime I point to something, and I say “paws up” because of my blanket training, my dogs know, “Okay, I got this. I can put my paws up on that stump out in the field to take a beautiful portrait.” “Oh yeah, I can put my paws up on your shoulder to be part of the selfie trick.” Do you see the behavior gets split down and the shaping is easy for the dog to figure out.

The session begins with the basics of handling food for training, followed by a detailed demonstration of using a food lure to encourage your puppy to follow a straight line. This technique not only engages your puppy but also lays the groundwork for more advanced commands. To kick off each training session on a high note, I'll share my personal method for getting puppies excited about training. Using enthusiastic phrases like "Are you ready to train?" boosts their eagerness and speeds up the learning process. Next, we'll progress to more complex maneuvers, teaching your puppy to follow the food lure through six different positions relative to the trainer. These include lateral movements (left and right in front of you), heel positions on both sides, a center position, and a backward follow, which serves as a precursor to the recall command. A key focus of the training is the timing of praise and rewards. Effective praise during the lure followed by rewarding your puppy at the end of the movement encourages them to re-engage with you, fostering a dynamic where the dog feels they are leading the session. This approach significantly boosts their motivation to train. Additionally, we'll integrate sit and down commands within each position and movement to generalize the training, ensuring your puppy adapts to a variety of commands seamlessly. To conclude each session, a clear "all done" signals to your puppy that the training is over, helping them distinguish between training and free time.
